I'd intended going to Bannockburn today but poor weather and bad lungs persuaded me that such a venture would be unwise.. Instead I added an Edinburgh photograph gallery to this site.. Some of the photographs were taken in 2005 and others in 2007. On looking over the Crocket's Land photos I was reminded that my ancestor, Thomas Gowans Crocket, went to live there with a rich uncle, a merchant who traded with the Low Countries, in 1824. Thomas can be seen here with his spouse, the beautiful Helen, much later in life, when he too had become a successful businessman. Thomas had to move in with relatives on the demise of his mother, at the hands of her unfortunate son-in-law in The Cowgate. In self-defence, Daniel Elphinstone stabbed Mary Crocket with a pen knife and she later died of blood poisoning. Daniel was sentenced to death, but on the supposed day of execution, sentence was commuted to transportation to Tasmania.. After 14 years he was granted a 'ticket of leave' in error. He stayed in Tasmania and started another family. Thomas Gowans Crocket went on to have a large family of his own, including my great-grandfather, William. |
